We were pleased to have hosted a visit of 13 Wootton Upper School students to Acuigen as part of their study to gain experience and understanding of what it is like to work for a business firsthand.
During their visit, the students had the opportunity to ask questions of CEO Derek Jones and Executive Interviewer Liz Lawrence and 2 Acuigen staff who are Wootton Upper School alumni (Ben Oldfield and Paige Barrett). The topics covered how to practice effective time management, how to transition smoothly from education to the workplace and how to identify and use your strengths to your advantage. Ben and Paige also spoke with the students about their potential next steps in education.
Following the visit, the Head of Careers at the Upper School, Yvonne Ashby, who accompanied the students, conducted a survey regarding the students’ knowledge of the business both before and after they spent the morning at Acuigen. She concluded that as a result of their stay with us, every student in the group had a vastly greater understanding of the career options, required skills for the workplace, safety at work and the rights and responsibilities of an employee. Overall, the students spending the morning with us turned out to be extremely worthwhile to both our company and these budding young adults. Upon their departure, we even heard comments such as, ‘I didn’t expect it to be so interesting but it was really good’. We are honoured to have had this impact on the next generation of entrepreneurs.
The visit was facilitated by Peter Rayner, Enterprise Coordinator from SEMLEP, who has a brief to connect schools and local businesses.
